20 Meter Shuttle Run Test (Beep Test)

Estimate the maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and cardiorespiratory endurance

Primary measureShuttle / Level completed
CategoryAerobic Capacity
FormatPROGRESSIVE
Pacing audio0.01s Calibrated

Standardized testing protocol

Participants repeatedly run a 20-meter distance, turning around at the beep, at increasing speeds. The protocol starts at 8.0 or 8.5 km/h and increases by 0.5 km/h every minute. The test ends when the subject can no longer keep pace for 2 consecutive runs.

Required field equipment

Marked distance of 20 meters on a flat surface, Time4Test audio pacing engine

Calculation formula & scoring

Time4Test automates this equation directly during the session:

VO2max is predicted from assessment performance using standardized regression equations based on level/shuttle completed.
